Detail from August, BOOK OF HOURS
BOOK OF HOURS
The Book of Hours is a suite of 12 drawings, one for each month of the year.
They were inspired by a 15th century work, Trés Riches Heures by the Limbourg brothers for Duke of Berry.
Their work attempted to encourage peaceful relationships between classes by trying to show how each lived their lives.
Central to every image is a castle or chateau surrounded by panoramas of human life in nature.
I In the following 12 works, the central thematic element shows a famous theater surrounded by complex landscapes.
The landscapes depict scenes of the local area with its animals, agriculture, celebrations, arts, and diverse communities.
The theater is a place of mystery, storytelling and art: its secrets are not so easily known by its public.
These works also depict the seasons, illuminated by astronomical and astrological night skies for each month.
Drawn in pencil on board, 14x8".
